Providenciales and Grand Turk

Provo has the beach. The rest is a boat ride away.

Which Grace Bay snorkel boat actually reaches the reef. What a clear kayak through the mangroves costs. Whether a Grand Turk golf cart is worth it for one shore day. Reviews of every tour you can book in Turks and Caicos.

Where to begin

Provo for the beach, Grand Turk for the morning you step off a ship.

Almost everything bookable sits on Providenciales, and most of that within a taxi ride of Grace Bay. Grand Turk is smaller, older and done on four wheels. Four starting points, and the best day out in each.

The boat day

Catamaran, private charter, or the half-day out to the cays. Pick your deck.

Every good week here has at least one. Four kinds of boat day, what it costs to board each one, and what the hull buys you.

Grace Bay

Grace Bay: the beach is free, the water is where the money goes.

Everything on Grace Bay →
★★★★★★★★★★5.0· 2,614 travellers on the most-booked morning

Twelve miles of sand with the reef sitting just offshore. You can walk it for nothing. The decision is which boat takes you over the edge of it, and at what hour.

The reef question

One reef stop, or three

3-4h· from $125· morning water

Short trips park on the near reef and hand out masks. The four-hour boats work two or three sites, including the drop-off, and carry enough crew to put someone in the water with you.

The comfort upgrade

Why a catamaran costs more

4h· from $145· shade on board

A flat deck, a swim ladder and somewhere out of the sun for the hour between stops. On a bumpy easterly day it is the difference between a good morning and a long one.

The short one

Twelve minutes over the bay

1h· from $88· no skill needed

You are strapped in, winched up and brought back down dry. It fills the gap between a late checkout and an evening flight, and the view down the whole length of the beach is the point.

4hour Group Half Day Snorkeling Excursion in Grace Bay

Spend four hours aboard a double-decker catamaran from Grace Bay, snorkeling near the Turks and Caicos barrier reef, visiting Little Water Cay, and enjoying lunch, drinks, slides, and a rooftop jump platform. The crew, including guides such as Manny, Sisco, Lamont, and DJ, keeps the outing friendly and family-focused.

Clear kayaks

The mangrove channels are the one thing the wind cannot cancel.

Behind Provo the water runs shallow and flat between the mangroves, and the hulls are transparent, so the rays and the juvenile fish under you are the tour. Most trips carry a drone and send the pictures on afterwards. Book the early or late slot for the light.

Every kayak trip →
Grand Turk

Grand Turk is seven miles long and runs on ship days.

When a hull is at the pier the island fills by nine and empties by four. The tram loop, the salt ponds, the lighthouse and the stingrays at Gibbs Cay all fit inside that window, and a rented cart beats waiting for a taxi.

What it costs

What a day out in Turks and Caicos actually costs.

Every tour on the site, grouped by the per-head price. These are not cheap islands, but the gap between the bands buys less than you would think.

Under $100

The island loop on Grand Turk, a parasail over the bay, a shared transfer, a short snorkel hop.

$100-200

The standards: the Grace Bay reef mornings, the clear kayak trips, catamaran sails and sunset cruises.

$200 and up

Full-day cruises with lunch on a cay, private charters and the boats that run to the outer islands.

Only here

Three things that only happen in Turks and Caicos.

Turquoise water and a beach bar exist all over the Caribbean. A transparent hull over a nursery channel, a freighter standing upright in the shallows and an island of iguanas with its own boardwalk do not.

Glass floor

The Clear Kayak Run

The channels behind Providenciales sit inside a protected nature reserve and run barely deeper than the paddle. In a transparent hull you watch the bottom slide past: turtle grass, small rays, whatever is sheltering in the roots. Guides carry a drone because the shot only works from above, and they send the files over later, which is why half the island books it.

The La Famille Express

A cargo ship broke free in a hurricane and settled upright on a sandbar a few miles off Provo, where it has stayed. The water around it is shoulder-deep and clear, the hull has turned into a reef of its own, and boats tie up alongside so you can swim the length of it. Jet ski trips run out to the same spot.

Little Water Cay

The Rock Iguanas

Little Water Cay is a low sand island in the Caicos Cays, and the Turks and Caicos rock iguana lives nowhere else on earth in any number. A boardwalk keeps feet off the nesting ground. Most half-day cruises stop here for twenty minutes between snorkel sites, which is about how long the iguanas tolerate an audience.

Book ahead

Four bookings on these islands that will not wait.

Most of a week here can be arranged the night before over a conch dinner. These four cannot: small boats, one departure a day, and a cart fleet that empties whenever a ship is at the pier.

  1. 012 Hour Champagne Sunset Cruise from Grace Bay, Providenciales (Adult Only)One sailing a day, timed to the sun, and the boat is small and adults only. There is no second run if it fills.
  2. 02Clear Kayak Photoshoot in Turks and Caicos Islands ProvidencialesSlots are set by light and tide, the guide takes a handful of boats out at a time, and the good hours go first.
  3. 03Drive GDT – Golf Cart RentalsGrand Turk has a small cart fleet and a cruise pier. On a ship day the counter is cleared out before most passengers are ashore.
  4. 04Private 4 Hour Power Catamaran Excursion in Grace BayA private charter is one boat and one party for the day, so the calendar is the whole constraint.
When the wind gets up

The trade wind decides what sails out of Grace Bay.

The islands sit in the easterly trades, and a stiff one puts a chop on the north shore that cancels small boats and empties the snorkel sites of visibility. The answer is to go leeward. The mangrove channels, the sheltered south-side beaches and anything on wheels run whatever the forecast says.
